Mr. Dornell Robert Simmons Sr. was born October 28, 1952, in Tampa, Florida to the late Mr. Cornell R. Simmons and Mrs. Lucretia Teart. Dornell was a member of New Bethel Progressive Missionary Baptist Church. He attended the Hillsborough County Public School System and graduated from Middleton High School in Tampa, Florida. Dornell went on to faithfully serve as an active-duty member in the United States Army, receiving an Honorable discharge after a successful tour of duty. Dornell returned to Tampa from the U.S. Army, beginning his new career by graduating from United Electronic Institute (UEI) as an Electronic Technician. He took his combine skills from the U.S. Army and UEI to Honeywell Electronics and Huntington Warehouse as a Forklift Operator, retiring from both companies. If you knew him, you are aware he was an outdoors, DIY type of guy. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, fishing, listening to music, watching westerns, and an animal lover.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Barbara Haggins; parents, Cornell R. Simmons and Lucretia Teart; stepparent, Edward Teart; sister, Mary "Sunshine" Larry; brother, Joseph Simmons. Dornell is survived by his dear children, Carl E. Presley, Dornell R. Simmons Jr., Sherica R. D. Simmons, Joseph N. Simmons, and Jerimiah J. Simmons; grandchildren, Carl E. Presley Jr., Vada J. Woody Jr., Matthew D. Baker, Lexes M. Baker; great grandson, Zavin King Larry, by his significant other, Patricia Smith; sisters, Luesther Simmons and Annette Burroughs; brothers, Athel Simmons and Anthony (Angela) Teart; close friend, Edward Mauna; and numerous other nephews, nieces, and relatives.
