A private graveside service will be held for Ms. Betty Jo Hayes (92) of Tampa, Florida who passed away on Friday, June 12, 2020 with Father Theobald Weria, officiating. The interment will follow. Betty Jo Hayes was born November 24, 1927. She was a longtime member of St. Peter Claver Catholic Church. Betty Jo was a proud graduate of St. Peter Claver Catholic School, Middleton Senior High School and Clark Atlanta College, class of 1949. She worked a short period of time as an elementary school teacher at both Lomax and College Hill Elementary Schools. She began as a long-term teacher of Business Studies at Middleton Senior High School and was recognized as the “Typewriting Teacher” who demanded excellence. Betty Jo was also known as the teacher whose students integrated the City of Tampa offices with expert typing skills. After 20 years of teaching at Middleton, she transferred in the initial integration to Hillsborough High School, where she retired as Department Head of Accounting and Business Education Subjects and retired after 30 years of service with Hillsborough County Schools. Betty Jo enjoyed retirement for many years. She was a member of Middleton Senior High School, class of 1945, Sigma Chapter of Clark Atlanta University and Tampa Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother. Her very special family include: devoted goddaughters, Dr. Paulette Walker, LaCheryl Aikens and Joanell Lawson; special loved family, Anne Chisholm of Cape Coral, Florida, Beverly Odom of New Orleans, Dorothy Crawford of Albany, GA; special loved adopted children, grandchildren and friends, Carlton Gambrell of New York, Yvonne Aikens, Dolores McIntosh, Curtiss Wilson, Carla Williams, Gloridine McNair, Annie Young Flinn, Nancy Sutton, Lavern Latson, Charlotte Hardy Sawyer, Sherri Day-Phillips and family, Edith Randolph, Emma Jean Morris of St. Louis, Mary Gadson, Wilbert Williams (Juanita), Jessie Berger of Atlanta, GA, Gwendolyn Lewis and Dorothy Clark of New York; her sisters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.; special thank you to caregivers, Total Compass Care LLC, Lillian Butler, Sarah Wilson, Tonya Nembhard and the LifePath Hospice, Burgundy Team; neighbors, Lynn and Colleen Burnett and Tonya Cielo and Tom Havens. She will be honored by her beloved, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., with an Omega Omega service to be held at a later time due to CDC restrictions.
