A Homegoing celebration for Mr. Wilbert Greer “Wil” of Tampa, Florida who passed away on Saturday, July 1, 2017 will be held on Saturday July 15th, 11:00 a.m. at Community Methodist Church, 207 Buckingham Ave E., Oldsmar, Florida 34677. The interment will follow. A husband, a father, a mentor, a friend. Wilbert Lee Greer was born October 29, 1941 to Willie Greer and Marjorie Cowan.  Wil had the great fortune of marrying his high school sweetheart, Gloria Jean Bowie and they had an amazing 45 years together.  They were blessed with two sons Michael and Christian.  Sadly, Wil lost his wife of four plus decades in early 2005. Wil was a faithful and loving husband and was both a rock of strength, and compassion to both Gloria and the family. Wil, a member of the United States Air Force Wil traveled across the world as he, his family and career grew. Norway, California, Philippines, Hawaii, Turkey and Florida were just a few of the places Wil called home over his 29-year military career.  Education was Wil’s true passion and becoming a highly sought after ROTC instructor for several years at San Francisco State University, Wil went back to school following his military career and secured a Bachelor’s degree in education from the University of South Florida and later achieved his Master’s degree at the University of Oklahoma.  From the military barracks of Oslo, Norway to the 3rd grade class at Morgan Wood Elementary in Tampa was quite the transition.  Beloved by both students and faculty at Morgan Woods, Wil spent 17 years developing future leaders with joy and determination. The true test of a man is not what he does when the spotlight is on him, but when no one is watching, when no one is there to judge.  In good times and bad, happy days and some a bit sadder, Wil was a strong sweet spirit, honest to his core.  He never asked for or was given anything but always deserved more. Wil had another great fortune of meeting and falling in love with Ms. Calverta Brown, they both had similar interest and backgrounds.  After a short courtship they prayed and God answered, in late 2006 they were united in Holy Matrimony, and their marriage was filled with love and true friendship.  Wil was a devoted, faithful and loving husband. He was a faithful and active member of the First Baptist Church of Citrus Park in Tampa.  Wil sung in the choir; was a part of the Promise Keepers Men’s Group; a regular at Sunday school and served on the Citrus Park Christian School Steering Committee. Wil’s service to his church is a testimony of his love of God, faithfulness and dedication as expressed in Matthew 25:21; “Well done thou good and faithful servant”. The morning of Friday July 1, 2017 the Almighty God in his infinite wisdom called on his son, to come home.  He leaves to cherish his memory and legacy with his wife, Calverta; his eldest son, Michael Christopher Dean; his youngest son, Christian Ethan Alexander; his grandson, Jordan Alexander all of Tampa; his younger brother, Larry Greer of Alton Illinois and one of his closest friends, Carl Gibbs of Tampa; a friend, mentor, father and husband, Wil spent 75 years defining what it meant to be a man.  In laughter, in tears, sorrow and cheer Wil was truly one of a kind.  A genuine and fulfilled life of 75 years, Wil has left a legacy that shall last lifetimes. The visitation will be held at Aikens Funeral Home on Thursday July 13th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The family and friends are asked to meet at the church on Saturday, July 15th for the service.
