He was born on July 7, 1942. He was the son of the late Edward Banks and Mattie Mae Hines. After attending the school system in Alabama, he relocated to Tampa, Florida at an early age and had since been actively involved in the community. He had a professional talent (gift) with woodwork and formed his own business, building deluxe dog houses, picnic tables, swing sets, etc. He also provided home improvement services that included carpenter work projects. He lived each day with purpose, with actions, positivity, love, encouragement and touched everyone’s life. He was a hard worker, devoted father, loving friend, and a man of great faith.  His legacy will live on and our lives are so very rich and blessed because of the joy that he brought to our lives. He was very devoted to the family’s production ministry, “Upshaw Productions” for more than 20 years. He was very talented and performed in several singing groups and bands. At an early age, Tommy was united in holy matrimony to Mary Katherine Ross Upshaw. She preceded his death on December 20, 2018. To this union, two children, Tommy Jr. and Jacquelyn, were born where they reside in Tampa, Florida. Tommy worked for Wonder Bread and Florida Steel as a Truck Driver for several years and retired as a Truck Driver from Winn Dixie where he worked for over 20 years.  He loved the Lord Jesus and was a member of New Progress Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a member of the Male Choir. He was also a member of the Blue Flames Social Club from Alabama, where he fostered an environment and culture of service to the community. Tommy made our lives special with his humble grace, his sense of humor and his infinite wisdom.  He was an inspiration to his family, loved ones, and friends. He always had a word of encouragement, he was a great teacher, and a great role model. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Banks and Mattie Mae Hines; grandmother, Beulah Howard; stepfather, Zema; sisters, Beulah Groce and Essie Mae Jackson; brother, Man; ex-wife, Mary Upshaw. He leaves to cherish his precious memories with his two loving children, son, Tommy Upshaw Jr.; daughter, Jacquelyn Upshaw Hines (Michael I); grandfather of four grandchildren, Shawana Upshaw, Michael II, Mylo, and Mario Hines; the great-grandfather of Michael III, all of Tampa, Florida; a devoted companion, Ida Brownlee of 25 years; a devoted niece and caregiver, like a daughter; Patricia Parks; a devoted nephew, Kamau Malik; like sons, Avery Brownlee and Anthony Brownlee; loving sister, Juanita Burston (Richard); a host of cousins, other relatives, neighbors, many friends, and loved ones.
