Melvin Don Nelson

February 25, 1947 ~ July 1, 2019 (age 72)

A Homegoing Celebration for Mr. Melvin Don Nelson, “Dog Leg” who passed away, Monday, July 1, 2019, will be held Wednesday, July 10, 2019, 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of College Hill, 3838 N. 29th Street, Rev. S. Evan Burrows, pastor officiating. The interment will be in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida. Melvin was born February 25, 1947 in Tampa, Florida to the late Oscar and Mary Alice Wright Nelson.  Melvin was a graduate and senior President of Middleton High School, class of 1965. He also was a graduate of FAMU, class of 1969, where he was a member of the Marching 100’s. He earned his master’s degree from Goldengate University in 1982. He also served in U.S. Army from 1970-1972. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, NAACP Tampa Chapter, Member of Urban League and a Member of the National Personnel Associations. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of College Hill, where he served in the Male Chorus, Security Team, and Tuesday Prayer Meeting. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Waymond and Ruby Nelson; and wife, Constance Rogers Nelson. He leaves to cherish his memories with children, Nivea Nelson Capehart, Octavia T. Tookes, Atlanta, GA and Regina A. Nelson; grandchildren, Itari Capehart, Jamerio Perry and Claxton Perry; great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren; brothers, caregiver Carlton L. Nelson (Luvator), Herbert Nelson (Queen) Apple Valley CA, and Donald Nelson, Hattiesburg, MI; sisters, Barbara J. Reese (Willie), Carroll Mitchell, Paulette Nelson Atlanta Ga, and Patricia Chaney (Maceo) Stone Mountain GA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Anthony Rogers, Luther Rogers, Jr (Cassandra) Geraldine L Tombs, Miriam Rogers and Debra Johnson (Rufus); host of nieces, nephews and cousins; special cousins, James Simmons and the Simmons Family; special friends, Lester Vickers and Dr. Billy Bryant; special thank you: VA Hospital, Hospice Team. The visitation will be held at Aikens Funeral Home Tuesday, July 9th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. The Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity ritual will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. The family and friends are asked to meet at the church on Wednesday for the funeral service.
