Oscar Nelson

March 6, 1942 ~ February 9, 2018 (age 75)

A homegoing celebration for Mr. Oscar D. Nelson of Tampa, Florida who passed away on Friday, February 9, 2018 will be held Saturday, February 17th, 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of College Hill, 3838 N. 29th St., Rev. S.  Evan Burrows, pastor with Rev. Christopher Jernagen, officiating. The interment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery.  Oscar D. Nelson was born March 6, 1942 to the late Oscar Nelson, Sr. and Mary Alice Wright-Nelson. Oscar was the third of eight children. He graduated from Middleton Senior High School class of 1961. His early commitment to his Christian faith was publicly professed at an early age while attending First Baptist Church of College Hill. He married May 18, 1962 from that union 2 daughters were born. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, Waymon Nelson and Ruby Nelson Homer; step-daughter, Bridgette Dry; brother, Wayne Nelson of Hattiesburg, MS. He worked as a U.S. Merchant Marine and as a general contractor. Oscar started his own business, Nelson’s Handyman Services. He was a lover of African artifacts. He will be deeply missed by his 6 children, Taranja Sampson (Thearon), Tianja Wilson (Tony), Senora Clark-Flowers (Tyrone), Aisha Nelson, Okpara Nelson and Aziza Nelson (Christopher); 11 grandchildren, Zakiya Brown (Ricard), Za’Andra Johnson, Aladdin Bryant, Kavon Chess, Kamari Nelson, Kaloni Nelson, Taylor Clarke, Miracle Crawford, Arianna Flowers, Damari Sampson and Dakota Flowers; 1 great-grandson, Kaelon Lucas (Makala); 1 great great-granddaughter, Serenity Lucas; 8 siblings, devoted sister, Barbara J. Reese and devoted brother-in-law, Willie Reese, Caroll L. Mitchell, Herbert Nelson (Queen) of San Diego, CA, Paulette Nelson of Atlanta, GA, Carlton Nelson (Luvator), Melvin Nelson and Patricia Chaney (Maceo), Donald Nelson of Hattiesburg, MS; lifelong friend, Elaine Bridges; special thanks to Joe Sellers; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The visitation will be held at Aikens Funeral Home on Friday, February 16th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. The family and friends are asked to meet at the church on Saturday for the service.
