Ernest Collins

July 30, 1933 ~ February 26, 2018 (age 84)

A homegoing celebration for Mr. Ernest Collins, Jr. of Tampa, Florida who passed away Monday, February 26, 2018, will be held Saturday, March 10th, 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Progress Village, 8722 Progress Blvd., Dr. Samuel L. Maxwell, Senior Pastor, officiating. The interment will be in Orange Hill Cemetery. Born Ernest Collins Jr. on July 30, 1933 to Ernest and Arie Goldwire Collins, in Quincy Florida.  He was the second of a sibling group of five.   His siblings were Woodrow Wilson, Mary Collins Shaw (Otto Shaw), Jimmy Collins and Willie C. Collins; all of whom preceded him in death. Growing up in Quincy, he attended the public schools of Gadsden County.  Reared in a loving, Christian home in St. John Community, he attended St. John A.M.E. Church, where he came to know the Lord as his personal Savior. He moved to Tampa, Florida, where he met the love of his life, Luella Delores White.  They were united in holy matrimony, with heart-felt love which lasted 60 years, until her demise, last November.  Added to this union were five children, Larry, Ernest, Lawrence, Linda and Carolyn.  Providing a good home and family connections were important to him.  He was also a real neighbor and a good friend who knew no strangers. He joined The First Baptist Church of Progress Village, along with his wife, where he continued to serve faithfully.  He had a deep abiding love for God and for people.  He was a strong, committed and dedicated man who didn’t mind lending a helping hand. He was blessed with multiple talents including mechanic, builder, and concrete finisher among other gifts.  He was employed for many years as a concrete finisher, from which he retired.  In his off-time, he enjoyed very much the sport of fishing and the gifts of mechanics and gardening. He answered the celestial call of God, departing this world and heading for his heavenly home; now resting in glory from labor to reward. He leaves to cherish his loving memories five children:  Ernest Collins, Larry Collins, Lawrence White (Jimmy), Linda Gordon  Carley,  and Carolyn Gordon Shine Bryant ;  one daughter-in-law: Marianna Collins; twelve grandchildren:  Lovi T. Collins, Lynn Hernandez-Gordon, Vonda Carley, Louis Noguera,  Robin White, Terron Shine, Chris  Bryant, Jennifer White, Chenard (Speedy) Bryant, Louise Rodriguez, Letecia Collins and Lauren Collins; a host of great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; six sisters-in-law, Annette Collins, Ineatha Roberts, Minnie Kemp, Laura Collins, Lucy Collins  and Loretta Brooks; one brother-in-law: Olester White and  a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other sorrowing relatives and friends. The visitation will be held at the church on Friday, March 9th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. The family and friends are asked to meet the church on Saturday for the service.
