Fred Hicks, Jr.

Homegoing celebration for Mr. Fred Hicks, Jr. of Tampa who passed away Sunday, November 3, 2013 will be held Saturday, November 9th at 11:00 a.m., St. John Cathedral, 3401 E. 25th Avenue, Pastor Eddie Newkirk, Jr., officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery, Thonotosassa, Florida. Fred Hicks, Jr. affectionately called “Buck or Bucky” by his family was the first born son of Fred, Sr. and Amanda Hicks. He was born in Tampa, FL on July 14, 1958 and attended the public schools of Hillsborough County. While attending Tampa Bay Tech High School, he was voted ‘Best Physique’. He was an outstanding athlete and he played middle linebacker and fullback. They called him “Diesel” because he was big in size, but quick. He graduated from Tampa Bay Tech in 1976 and accepted a football scholarship at Tulane University where he was known as “Fast Freddy”. In 1979, he played in the Liberty Bowl and he graduated from Tulane in 1980. He was united in holy matrimony to Sabrenia Windham in 1983, and to this union was born two sons. He also has a younger son. Fred was reunited with his sweetheart Venda Phelps from his college days and they have been married for the last six years. Fred accepted Christ in his youth and made an adult decision to live for the Lord. He retired from GMAC and was the former owner of Hicks Plaza and the It’s That Time Hair Salon in his latter days he worked with troubled youth and provided direct care for mental health patients. Fred was reared in St. John Cathedral formerly St. John Missionary Baptist Church. Fred was into fitness and health, loved good movies, politics and music. He was preceded in death by father, Fred Hicks, Sr.; spouse, Sabriena Windham-Hicks; maternal grandparents; paternal grandparents, Cass Henry Hicks (Willie Lov); several uncles and aunts in the Hicks family, Blue Family and Williams family. He leaves to cherish his memories with wife, Venda Hicks; sons, Fred Hicks III, (Erica) of Charlottesville, VA, Stephan L. Hicks, Sr. (Rebecca) of Killeen, TX and Alexander Hicks; step-daughter, Keesa Julius; granddaughters, Sabrina Hicks, Tulelei Hicks, Laliah Carlisle and Keana Rhinehart; grandsons, Stephan L. Hicks, Jr., Landon Carlisle, Walter Dangerfield III and Keshaun Dangerfield; mother, Amanda Blue Hicks; brother, Gainey Hicks; sisters, Constance Haywood and Bardine Hicks; aunts, Barbara Baker, Betty Blue and Beatrice Hicks of Birmingham, AL; uncles, Leroy Blue (Claudia), James Blue (Freddye) and Sylvester Blue, Sr. of Palatka, FL; and a host of other relatives and friends. The visitation will be held at Aikens Funeral Home on Friday, November 8th from 5 to 8 p.m. The family and friends are asked to meet at the church on Saturday for the service.
